Hallgrímskirkja Church

Church of Hallgrímur: Built in 1986, Hallgrímskirkja is the largest church in the country and also one of its tallest buildings. 73-meter-high tower, the church is easily visible from any part of the city. The interior is 1,676 square meters (18,040 sq ft).

The church took 41 years to build, beginning in 1945 and ending in 1986, although the prominent tower was completed well before the rest of the building. The crypt under the choir was dedicated in 1948, the spire and wings were finished in 1974 and the nave was dedicated in 1986. During its construction, the structure was criticized for being excessively old-fashioned and a combination of architectural forms. The church was initially planned to be smaller, but Church of Iceland authorities desired a huge spire to outshine Landakotskirkja (Landakot’s Church), the cathedral of the Catholic Church in Iceland.
