A Guided Glacier Hike in Iceland
A day on the ice with our private guide, Rowan, including climbing and blue-ice formations.

October 1, 2019. This was a guided glacier hike with Rowan. The old article used Hvannadalshnúkur Peak as its location label, but the recorded route does not establish a summit visit or the exact glacier name. The GPX contains 655 recorded points from my hike.
The original trip notes list “Distance 3.46 m | Ascent 425 feet.” The distance unit in that label is ambiguous; the GPX is retained as the original route record, not a current navigation guide.
Distance 3.46 m | Ascent 425 feet
Exploring the glacier was a once-in-a-lifetime experience. With Rowan, our skilled private guide, leading the way, we embarked on an unforgettable glacier hike that showcased the stunning diversity of Iceland’s terrain.
A Journey Across Stunning Landscapes#
Our adventure began on lush, grassy plains at the beginning of our glacier hike. From there, the scenery quickly transformed as we transitioned from grassy lands to dirt-covered ice, and finally to the pristine glacier itself. Each step revealed a new layer of natural beauty, making the journey as exhilarating as the destination.
Conquering the Glacier#
The glacier hike was both challenging and awe-inspiring. Although the uneven surface tested our endurance, the sheer majesty of the ice made every step worthwhile. Once on the glacier, we were treated to incredible experiences. For instance, we enjoyed ice climbing, marveled at natural ice formations, and explored vibrant blue ice caves.
