Beginning A Silent Patriarch

A reading note at the beginning of Daniel Fanous’s biography of Saint Pope Kyrillos VI.

Faith & LifeOctober 5, 2026Alfred Hanna

A historical portrait of Pope Kyrillos VI.

I’m in the early stages of reading A Silent Patriarch by Daniel Fanous, and I already think it is a phenomenal biography. I want to share what I’m learning about Saint Pope Kyrillos VI as I work through it.

The full title is A Silent Patriarch: Kyrillos VI (1902–1971), Life and Legacy. Published by St Vladimir’s Seminary Press in 2019, it follows his life before and during the patriarchate.

If you’re new to Saint Pope Kyrillos VI, you can start with the introduction to his life or follow the timeline. There are also stories about Father Mina’s windmill years and his letters on leadership and service.

I’m not far into the book yet, so this is a beginning rather than a review of the whole biography. As I keep reading, I want to share what I learn and the questions it brings up.
