Montréal by the Water and from Above

From the Old Port’s Clock Tower to the view from Mount Royal, two stops during our family visit to Montréal.

The Clock Tower, river, and bridge at Montréal’s Old Port.

At the Old Port, Montréal meets the water. From Mount Royal, the view opens across the city. We visited both while we were in Montréal to see family.

The river, the Clock Tower, and the skyline each have a story behind them. Here’s a little of that history alongside our photographs from the trip.

Along the Old Port#

Montréal’s Old Port reflects the city’s long connection with the St. Lawrence River. Its Clock Tower has stood at the end of the quay since 1922. It was created as a memorial to sailors who died during the First World War, giving the landmark a meaning beyond its place in the skyline.

The surrounding waterfront has changed greatly. Major port operations gradually shifted east, and the historic area took on a different role. Restoration and public access helped turn former working space into a place where people could reconnect with the river. The Clock Tower remained through that transition.

Today, you can enjoy the riverfront while still seeing traces of its working past in the quays and the Clock Tower.

Across the city from Mount Royal#

Mount Royal offers a different scale. The park opened in 1876 and was designed by Frederick Law Olmsted. Tourisme Montréal identifies the Kondiaronk lookout, in front of the chalet, as a place to see downtown and the St. Lawrence River.

Our photographs from Mount Royal include the skyline, the chalet, and the park, along with pictures of us against that city backdrop.

Two views, one visit#

These were two stops during our family visit, each with a different view of Montréal. The photographs below bring you down to the waterfront and up into the park.
